In my opinion the Bundesliga is the second best league in the world in terms or excitement, quality teams, players and the young talent which comes from it. Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, Ousmane Dembele, Christian Pulisic to name just a few players who have emerged from that league or have made their career in that league. The Bundesliga is brilliant at getting young players into the league and into first teams; there is so much young talent in every team you can never tell where the next star will come from.
Well I’m willing to give it a good guess and say that it’s going to be 19 year old Texan, Weston Mckennie. Mckennie started his career as only an 11 year old playing for his local team FC Dallas where he remained until late last year (2016). He was then picked up by Schalke and stayed in the youth team for not even a season before he was promoted to the first team this season.
Mckennie stands out because, unlike many young stars, Mckennie isn’t a striker or a winger instead he is a playmaking Central defensive Midfielder, arguably one of the hardest positions on the pitch as you need to be composed, have good vison, quick reactions, good passing and good dribbling and at 19 years of age Mckennie is already showing all of this qualities.
He has already played 6 games from a possible 8 this season and is starting to make himself a key player for a team who currently find themselves 9th in the table. Having watched Mckennie several times this year for me he reminds me a lot of Pogba. I realise that this is a big call but I love the way Pogba plays and I love the way this lad plays.
He is strong, he’ll take the ball forward fending off defenders as he does, he is quick like Kante sometimes you’d think there’s more than one of him on the pitch. He has brilliant confidence in himself , there’s not many 19 year olds' who step up to a first team and are instantly ready to start taking on their opposite number, quick feet and good vision he has both. He is also a self-proclaimed bully, he loves to bully opposition midfielder, having racked up 10 fouls already so averaging 2 a game Mckennie is showing the hunger that a good central midfielder needs to be a success. Yet my favourite quality is his signature move very Barcelona-esq in nature is his over the top through balls, he loves a good chipped pass and is another reason he draws a likeness from Pogba. There are a lot of good American players heading to the Bundesliga and Mckennie is another to add to that list.
The position that he is in takes a lot of time and skill to master, this unknown gem still has a lot to learn but he has only played 7 professional games yet he is showing a lot of skill and vision for a 19 year old, trust me you need to watch this space.
