For the past 13 years Valencia has been a shadow of their former selves. They haven’t since come close to replicating their terrific 2003-04 season where they won a treble of La Liga, UEFA Cup and Super Cup all in one season. Star that season was Mista who scored more goals than David Villa, Samuel Eto’o and Fernando Torres.
Valencia most recently got air time after being beaten embarrassingly 3 – 0 at home to Swansea in the Europa league and last season finishing a miserable 12th in the league. But this season things have changed. Valencia currently lying in 2nd remaining one of the few teams round Europe to have not been beaten all season through all competitions whilst also getting brilliant draws with both Madrid teams in the league. Valencia have found a new lease of life after bringing in Marcelino Garcia Toral a manager who really should be considered one of the best in the business.

Through his career spanning a total of 648 games Marcelino has won 299 (as of 26/10/17) of those games and only lost 180 matches. He has found a formula that works for Valencia and of the 10 games played they have won 7 and drawn 3. Valencia are now also second highest scorers in La Liga only 1 goal behind Barcelona. These goals have come from the new star partnership of Rodrigo (formally of Benfica) and penalty expert Simone Zaza who have score 13 goals between them only 1 less than Suarez and Messi (Of that 14 Messi has scored 11!)
Valencia really are flying, averaging nearly 3 goals a game they were unlucky not to beat both Athletic and Real. They have a manger who doesn’t mind taking risks with a “just score more than the opposition” attitude but with a defense that can be solid when it is needed keeping clean sheets in 5 of their ten games this season. Octobers form shows no sign of this form stopping with some eye catching score lines. 3-2 v Athletico Bilbao, 6-3 v Real Betis, 4-0 v Savilla and 2-0 over Real Zaragoza in the Copa Del Rey.
What may give them even more of an advantage is that Valencia are in a position where every game is a final, they are not in Europe which gives them a big advantage over there league and Cup rivals who are, there is nothing to lose. Valencia could really move mountains this season with Madrid starting the season on a low there is a real opportunity for Valencia to maintain their top 3 spot and when Champions League games start staking up on both Madrid and Barca I fully expect Valencia to make ground and I really wouldn’t be surprised if they won something this season!
Are Valencia going to be one of the surprise packages of the season? Do you think they can keep their form going. Please leave a comment!
