So I’ve decided that this is going to be a regular thing, I mean last week I may as well have told you how Huddersfield were going to score, I warned about set pieces and I said “Palmer is the man who pulls the strings” or something along those lines. But maybe I was too late last time, I didn’t give Coyle enough time to read it and rethink his tactics so this time I’m giving him a chance to take a look at how we should line up against Preston and how we can win!
So first up how are the odds? Well Rovers haven’t lost in 3 games picking up 7 points from 9 whereas Preston haven’t won in their last 3 picking up 2 points from nine. Preston are at home but have only beaten Rovers twice since 1980 the last of their victory’s coming at the end of last season. Blackburn are at the highest moral they’ve been on all season and Preston at their lowest with two of their players being sent off for fighting each other! And with reports of more unrest behind the scenes there probably isn’t a better time to play them!
The last game really isn’t the easiest to look at, yes they lost but also 3 men were sent off which isn’t the most common occurrence, so instead let’s look at their 2-1 loss to then unbeatable Newcastle.
Preston play a solid 4-4-2 with Pringle and Johnson sitting back and pulling the strings, Paul Gallagher has the most assists for Preston with 4 and Jordan Hugill is the top scorer with 5 goals, but Preston have 12 different goal scorers this season so goals are going in from everywhere. But what this also says to me is that most of the goals are coming from set pieces, in fact nearly 50% of their goals have been directly from set pieces.
But what is noticeable from the Newcastle game is how both goals came off either cross or a long ball. This theme continues into previous games also! Take the game where they were battered 5 – 0 by Brentford, Scott Hogan played as a lone striker that day and scored a Hattrick, every goals came off a cross, defensive mistake or one through ball. But the be all and end all is that Preston cannot handle balls constantly landing in the box. I’m seeing a Sam Gallagher and Conway connection paying off very well in this game.
Also I’d advise playing around with the ball in THEIR HALF! Not our own, therefore putting us under pressure, but actually there half. Preston sit back and do not press! Lobbing crosses in after a bit of build-up play is where our goals are coming from in that game, you heard it here first!
But against Rotherham, Preston made there strengths known, against a struggling team. Slow build up in their own half followed by explosive speed when they cross the half way line. They abused the wings so often! Paul Gallagher and Johnson are the ones to watch for that. Every goal came from a run a cross and a close finish. By the way they conceded a header that game so…
To conclude force them into long balls from deep, don’t sit back! Give them a piece of their own medicine and use the wings, make sure that we have big Sam up front Preston could be his day to remember. Have Emnes sat behind ready to capitalise on mistakes. Finally please don’t waste Marshall at right back we need him on the wing! COYB
