You ever heard the one about the 23-year-old, Polish striker who plays for a mid-table Italian side with more goals than Cristiano Ronaldo? No didn’t think you had, but neither has most of the planet.
Krzysztof Piatek, is one of the most hot strikers in the world right now and you’ve never heard of him and that’s not just because of his ridiculous name. The striker who plays for Genoa in Serie A has scored 13 goals in 13 games in all competitions and currently sits top of the league scoring charts on 9 goals, 1 ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
6 years ago Piatek was playing in the Polish 4 tier with Lechia Dzierzoniow (Try saying that 3 times as fast) His goal scoring record wasn’t great. After moving to another ridiculously named team Zaglebie Lubin he spent 4 seasons with the club scoring 18 goals in 85 league appearances. But his form drastically improved after moving to fellow Polish team Cracovia where he would spend two seasons scoring 32 goals in 65 games. This form bought him a 4 million euro move to Italian top tier side Genoa where he has been sparkling ever since.
His first game for the club was a little more than a success. Within 19 minutes of his debut against Lecce in the Italian Coppa Italia he had already scored a hattrick and before halftime he had scored his 4th.
If you thought this was going to be a one off against lower league opposition, you’d be wrong. Piatek would become the first player in over 60 years to score 8 goals in his debut 6 top-flight games. This put him above the likes of Ronaldo, Zlatan and now Cristiano Ronaldo. He would go on to score in his next 7 games consecutively!
This sort of form has of course brought speculation from abroad that a big move is in the offing. The likes of Manchester United and Chelsea have been named with a potential price tag of £35 million. Reports from France, Spain and Germany all say there’s an interest from Napoli and more importantly Barcelona. With Suarez not getting any younger the papers from across Europe have said that scouts from Barcelona have been monitoring the exploits of this young striker and could potentially make a move at the end of the season with Genoa remaining firm that they will not lose their star man so early after buying him.
This is a young striker who could strive for greatness if he makes the right move. It will be very interesting to see where he goes from here. Watch this space.
