The 2011/2012 season is a season that most Blackburnians tend to forget. Or rather want to forget. Obviously that was the year that we got relegated from the Premier League and the year that a lot of problems started and have only just been solved in the past two weeks. Yesterday was 5 years to the day that Venkey’s made their first massive mistake! They sacked Big Sam! And this came as a big shock to everyone as at the time we were 13th in the Premier League and actually only 1 win away from 6th! After Sam came probably one of the worst managers the club has ever had. Steve Kean. A name that cannot be said by Blackburn Fans anymore without an abrupt spit to the ground to even the mention of his name. And after a fateful game against Wigan on the 7th of May 2012 we were relegated, with chickens on the pitch and the owners left with egg on their faces.
I remember being driven home by my dad that night. It was a very long, tedious and quiet drive home. We only spoke to each other about 2 times on the whole way home and one of those conversations included me quoting “we will be in the championship for at least 5 years”
Now there is no way I could have possibly imagined the problems that would come over the next four years. With a constant change of manager a transfer embargo and the only positive coming from the first two seasons being Jordan Rhodes. Since that day we have had 5 managers with several stand in’s. But now for the first time since we sacked ‘Big Sam’ we have a proper manager with actually a flattering CV.
This is our 4th season in the championship and things are well and truly looking up! The Team is playing well we are unbeaten Under Paul lambert. Plus we are only 4 points away from a play-off place! Do I think we can get promoted this season? Yes I think we can. But will we get promoted? No. Now don’t start to think that I’m one of these fans who just sees the negatives in the club! No I’m not that! I just don’t believe that our team is currently worthy of getting promoted! Some changes need to be made and Lambert has rightly come out and said this! But it all depends on who he buys now in January. He could buy a great striker someone who works perfectly with Rhodes or maybe they could just be a flop like a lot of our forwards have been in the past few years. But what I’m really trying to say is that this January, not could, but, will determine whether we get into the playoffs, mid-table or even promotion! Because at the moment I just can’t see our team in the Premier League. And if we get promoted next season. Just saying but I called it!
