If Conway plays this against Reading this weekend then he will have played his 109th game for the club since joining in 2014. Yet it has only just occurred to me that not a big deal was made about his 100th appearance. So to celebrate the occasion I’m going to tell you why Conway has been the best player at the club since joining on January 31st 2014.
Work rate
If I was a manager of a football team, no matter what division we were in the one trait that I would need from every player on the pitch is a high work rate. Yet somehow even in professional football players can still go missing and not add anything to a game. So many times over the years I have heard Blackburn fans at full voice, scream their opinions of a player because they were a lazy so and so. Conway has never been one of these players. From a mile away even the most inexperienced football fan would look upon Conway and see a man who is willing to work to the death. One of the few players who will always continue to the final whistle!
Passing
The Gestede and Conway connection one of the most lethal partnerships I’ve ever seen. An in swinging ball from Conway always perfectly placed on the deadly forehead, even the strongest defences would have been felled by this unstoppable force. During his time in Blackburn Conway has assisted over 25 times in all completions, form corners, free kicks and Crossfield balls there is no limit to this man’s reach of ability. Every year since joining Conway’s average pass distance has been over 20m with his pass completion rate over 75% for the past 3 years! Conway has also been the producer of over 200 key passes either leading to a goal or to a clear cut chance which is actually an incredible when you thing that last year he made 92 key passes in the league compared to Neymar’s 89 in La Liga or Ronaldo’s 39? (Not really sure if that means anything but it sounds great)
Goals
Now he doesn’t score many I’ll give you that (12), but when he does score you know it’s going to be a good one, I have very fond memories of looking up from my pie in the match against Rotherham only to see Conway go for what I saw as a ridiculous effort from the far left of the field, then to watch it sail into the top corner of the goal was sublime. Or his goal’s against Burton this season, also I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player hit the crossbar from long range more than Conway!
The only thing missing from Conway is the Armband, Conway’s work rate and effort is enough to be motivating to others and Jason Lowe doesn’t have that! I just think that Conway is the sort of player I would also have in my team and is the sort of player who is silently curial to the way we play and without him I think that we’d be in a much worse situation than we already are!
