Now I know straight away that a lot of you are looking at that title and thinking, ‘well actually that’s not true, what about the premier league?’ well just hear me out there is a reason why I believe this.
For years now Rovers fans have campaigned and fought for the removal of the Venkys and the response that the fans have received has been a big blank wall of nothingness. There are a lot of fans out there who look at the club in the current predicament and relate all problems to the Venkys arrival and abhorrent running of the club. A fair assumption? But what do they have to do with this being the toughest season ever? Well at the moment the Venkys are nothing but a big black cloud hovering over Ewood and it has been there ever since 2011. And now when football fans think of Blackburn Rovers they think of the Venkys for all the wrong reasons. Blackburn no longer offer any sort of a fear factor. Every club no matter what league come to Blackburn and expect to get something, you can no longer deny that. This was only emphasised by Blackburn’s opener this Saturday to Norwich. Obviously Norwich are a tough opponent and one of the favourites to go up this season but that is no excuse for what happened.
There was a distinct lack of passion in a much changed Blackburn squad. And it was genuinely very heart wrenching to watch. The first 30 minutes were the worst that I have ever watched at Rovers and it scares me. I don’t ever want to have to feel the same way that I did on Saturday. Obviously Stokes scoring was the high point of the match but it’s that first 30 minutes of the new footballing season that really disturbs me.
This may be the toughest season not just for the team but for us the fans. If this sort of football is to continue then we are in danger of losing even more fans. Just over 12,000 people came to watch the opening game of the season and usually those numbers change depending on how a team performs so we could potentially see a game where we get less 10,000 fans if this continues. And I don’t blame fans for not wanting to come down why you would want to watch an unmotivated, lack of passion and bad tactics team. Play against teams who are so far ahead in quality that it’s like watching men v boys.
It’s going to be the toughest season ever because all teams around us having been spending lots of money, Fans expect failure, for fans who do stay it will be hard to watch and if something doesn’t change then we are in trouble, big trouble.
