Today is the first day of the Capital One Cup. Blackburn will be playing Shrewsbury tonight at ewood as their first game. In recent years rovers don't have many good memories of this cup. With relatively early exits in all of the last few seasons. Most recently was when Blackburn slumped to 1-0 defeat to league 1 outfit Scunthorpe. But if you turn back the clocks a mear 13years rovers actually won the cup (then called the worthington cup). Obviously Blackburn have done well in the FA Cup having been one match away from Wembley over the last two seasons. But the question is why should we take this cup seriously?
This season hasn't started to well. After a controversial loss to wolves Rovers fans have been getting pretty angry at the team, manager and even other fans where as others remain optimistic. At the moment there is no way of bringing these two groups of people together on the same boat as they just don't think the same. But tonight is an opportunity to change that. If Bowyer sends out a team of players who are willing to put in the effort and are not just all youth players, maybe start all of our new signings let us see what they can do, that will make some fans happy. Secondly we need to not just win but win convincingly. After tearing though social media it is clear to me that a lot of people want to see a big win for the first time in a long time. If we can do that then at least some of people who believe our club is collapsing will be shushed. Thirdly the team needs to show the commitment to this game as if it was a league game. Let's face it tonight we will get a max croud of max 5000 but even so those 5000 will want to watch some good football. I think I speak for most fans when I say that all they want to see is some entertaining, exciting and fast football. Not this boring, slow and defencive football that we are used to. Tonight may just be a first round match but it's more than just that now.
