On Thursday I gave my answer to the fans Jury in the Lancashire telegraph, the question was “Do you think that Blackburn had a successful window?” Or on those lines. I answered no. But with only 250 words to give my answer I didn’t really get to elaborate. So I’ll elaborate!
First thing I said was that we brought in to many loans. 6 out of 12 signings all loan players. Not just that but also most of them are still youth players from their home clubs. So we can talk all we like about the potential of the likes of Samuelson and Byrne but in reality that’s not what we need. We needed ‘guaranteed’ (Obviously take that with a pinch of salt) skill, we needed players who have been in the situation that we are in now before and have that experience. But instead we bring in a load of players who may be good in the future! Maybe in two years’ time we’ll look at them and think yeah there decent players. Now don’t get me wrong sometimes youth loans can work, let’s take Rekik or Todd Kane two youth players who came I on loan and were actually very good for us. But at the moment they really aren’t what we needed.
The second thing I mentioned was the fact that we didn’t cover the positions we needed the most. Like I said, improvements could have been made all over the park but there were some that we needed more than others. We needed to cover the huge gaping hole at the back left by Duffy and Hanley with the £9 million they left behind so we covered it with Greer, Mulgrew, and Hoban. And to be fair I do rate Mulgrew, Hoban could have something and is suppose Greer there for experience? But not a single penny spilled on transfer money. Then we come to the woeful LB and RB positions. We signed Hendrie and Williams. Praise be to the gods we spent money! Williams an insane 250k which is just over 2% of the money we got for Hanley and Duffy. Then we brought in other LB Hendrie who no-one really knows much about, he’s been on loan from West Ham to other teams but never really stood out. Then RB, we signed well…nothing. And it’s not like we can argue that we have any good RB’s apart from maybe Marshall which really says something.
Then we needed a CM a good CM so we got Byrne. It’s ridiculous to think that a position that we have been lacking in since Cairney left has been so forgotten about, Akpan and Evans must really pull their weight in training because for whatever reason managers don’t feel the need to strengthen.
Now I would talk about forwards but really they can talk for themselves, each of the four strikers we now have can be good on their day so we really need to hope beyond hope that it’s their day sometime soon.
But it does feel like I end up saying the same things over and over. Venkys need to do this, Venkys need to do that but I’ve lost faith now until they’re gone nothing will change.
Venkys out.
