Another Friendly another trialist. Danny Guthrie is the latest player to get added to the list of trialists who have been with Rovers in recent weeks. But who is he and would I have him?
Name: Danny Sean Guthrie
Age: 28
Nationality: English
Position: Midfielder
Height: 5ft 9in
Danny started his footballing in the Manchester United youth academy in 2000. In 2002 Danny's family moved to merseyside this was where his real career began. He stayed in the youth set up for 3 years but in 2005 Danny was finally promoted to the first team. Danny's only 3 starts for Liverpool were in 3 competitions. The first his debut against reading in the league cup. His second his first prem start against Portsmouth. Finally his third was in the champions league against Galatasaray.
In 2007 Danny went on an emergency loan to Southampton on a month long deal which was later extended to the full season. He made 10 appearances. The next season Dannh went on loan to Bolton wanderers where he made 25 appearances the most notable of which was his appearance in a 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the UEFA cup. Finally after 2 seasons of loans Danny finally signed a professional contract with Newcastle in a transfer worth around 2.5million. Danny went on to make 92 appearances for Newcastle over the coming 4 years and scored 7 goals.
In June 2012 Danny signed a 3 year deal with Reading here he made 62 appearances scoring 5. His first in his second appear for the team, a free-kick against Chelsea.
Last season Danny spent his time on loan to Fulham where he only made 6 appearances. After last season Reading decided not to renew his contract and now here he is for us.
Now for me this is a difficult one. Danny definitely has/had the ability and experience any champion or Premiership would like. But after being dropped from the Reading Team and only being handed a handful of games for Fulham last season the question is does he still have it in him to produce or has his best days gone by. It could be a risk.
